Eleven!

Eleven years ago on a Saturday just like today in Texas not too far from where I am now, Steve and I were walking into the library. He pinched my bum - I jumped and very literally popped! 8 hours later I got the best birthday present...

At 11, Rhianna is now only about 5 inches shorter than me, reads way more than I do, loves playing games, is still excellent at making lists, practices piano on her own, and is just generally a kind helpful friend and oldest sister. I think she had a fun day playing games with a few friends she is getting to know, talking with old friends in Tucson, and eating her favorite foods - homemade mac&cheese and chocolate chip cookies and ice cream. I am grateful to be a mom - I love you Rhianna!

8 Months!

Maren is the first kid I have (almost) kept up with monthly. I missed last month with the end of school and moving. But we are fairly well finished moving in. We hung a few pictures last Saturday. We just have 2 pesky boxes left, mainly filled with all the kids art/craft stuff that I am not sure where to put....

Part of that is due to Maren's great changes over this past month. She now has 5 teeth. We have been giving her new foods just about every day and she is happy to eat. We waited the longest to give her food, including Cheerios, so she has figured things out fast compared to what I remember. On only the 2nd day having Cheerios she could pinch them to pick them up and not have to search all over her hand and face like I remember with other kids. My muscles have slowly gotten stronger, but now even I get tired carrying her for long. But good for her she also is so super close to crawling. She now can get where she wants with a mixture of scooting, rolling, stretching etc. She gets up on all fours but just can't keep going yet. So I am trying to think at least a little bit about what is down on all those bottom shelves she will soon be getting in to. She had been better at sleeping but moving messed that up. However, she did do this just the other day...
And now a few videos showing her attempts at crawling and her excellent back scooting....

On the move at the end of May....

One of the great blessings of having a nice moving budget from Texas A&M was that it allowed us to enjoy all our last time in Tucson with good friends. We never really liked the cactus or rocks or super heat but we did have some great experiences there and became friends with wonderful people.

The end of May was time to finish up school, including Rhianna's 5th grade promotion, awards and parties for all the kids' activities, and visits with friends. Many people had us over to play or eat or swim and we enjoyed the last few weeks. Here are a few pictures from those last days in Tucson:

The packers did all our house in 3 1/2 hours (Amazing!) and then the movers took everything the next day and we headed off to Texas. It took a few days for things to arrive, so we were in a hotel for about a week total. Overall things went pretty good but spending all day together and all in one car/room started to get tiring so we were grateful to get all our things and be in the house. It was a tricky time for Maren since she was really on the verge of crawling but didn't have much space and she was getting teeth. Just before we left Tucson the 3rd on the bottom broke through and during the week of our move she got the 2 big front top teeth. So she would wake up lots and just want me and want to eat and since we were all in one room I didn't want to wake anyone else and so Maren and I shared a bed and didn't sleep too well. Now we are pretty well settled and almost all the way unpacked. We haven't opened the picture boxes yet so I am hoping they made it okay. Almost everything else did....

The big mishap of the move was with Steve's car. We all drove together in the van and were having his Civic towed on one of those big open car trailers that carries several cars. We got a call as we were driving through west Texas that the driver had had a fire on his trailer and the car was burned. He is not sure exactly what happened, (maybe something broke and scraped the ground and started the fire as he was driving??). He was okay but it was scary for him and really shook him up. In any case we now know from his insurance that 5 of 8 cars he was carrying were burned and 4, including ours, were considered totaled. Now for those with much nicer cars I am sure this is a much bigger bummer. For us it was an older car and just makes for one crazy moving story. They are giving us a fair price for the car, the main thing is that the car was still working great and we just weren't planning on needing to get a car for a while. Oh well....we have room in the garage for all the boxes and packing paper....

Now on to adventures in College Station!
